Recognized Leader in Teacher Preparation Expands Access to Aspiring Teachers Nationwide
New York, NY – March 20, 2019 — Bank Street Graduate School of Education, a recognized leader in teacher and leader preparation, is launching new nationally focused online master’s degree programs to help address the projected national teacher shortage and provide aspiring educators across the country with access to the Bank Street approach to teaching and learning.
Bank Street’s online programs are unique, combining the convenience of online coursework with supervised fieldwork experiences in educational settings and peer support to help graduate students connect theory with practice and become well-prepared teachers ready to work with children. Two online programs—Childhood Dual Certification in Special and General Education and Early Childhood Dual Certification—will begin in May 2019 with more, including Childhood and Early Childhood Special Education certification, starting in Fall 2019.
With a projected growth of 700,000 additional students attending public elementary and secondary schools every year, along with projected teacher shortages in many areas, there is more need than ever for a nationally recognized leader such as Bank Street to step in and prepare teachers to lead in education.
“At Bank Street, we view teachers and leaders as facilitators of academic, social, and emotional development so all students can thrive in school and succeed in life,” said Shael Polakow-Suransky, President, Bank Street College of Education. “Like all Bank Street graduate programs, our new online offerings combine the study of human development, learning theory, and sustained clinical practice to produce well-prepared educators who are ready to provide their students with meaningful learning opportunities best suited for their learning and growth.”
Bank Street’s approach to teacher preparation is proven to yield exceptional results including higher teacher confidence, stronger preparedness, and a long-term commitment to the field of education. According to a study conducted by the Stanford Center for Opportunity Policy in Education (SCOPE), Bank Street graduates are more likely to express confidence in their preparation and stay in education longer than their peers. They are also highly sought after by principals and directors of educational institutions nationwide—with 90% of employers saying Bank Street graduates are well- or very well-prepared as teachers.
Bank Street’s online Master of Science in Education programs are flexible and provide convenient online access to a sought-after Bank Street education.
To launch the new programs nationwide, Bank Street is partnering with Meteor Learning, a leader in supporting higher educational institutions with employer-aligned programs aimed at adult learners. Meteor Learning is focused on extending the Bank Street approach to teacher preparation into school districts around the country, providing greater access to aspiring educators and leaders.
